Lots of fantastic local bands are releasing their records this month; so many that we couldn’t even come close to writing stories about them all. Be sure to catch the release shows for The Weir (you can read about it in the section), Misanthropy, Moosifix, and Doberman, and make sure you pay for their music if you like it. Recording ain’t cheap! Here is a blackened show to start your month off: on Sunday, June 2, head down to Vern’s (622 – 8 Ave. S.W.) for Saskatoon’s Autaric. The band will be performing alongside Desecrate Scripture and Calgary’s Vile Insignia and Path to Extinction. Cover is $10, show starts at Clint o’clock. If that doesn’t grind your gears, or you have the whole evening free, mosey down to the New Black Centre for Music and Art (919 – 9 Ave. S.E.) for Grand Prairie’s Edge of Attack. They will be performing with Loremaster, End Silence, Chasing Cygnus, Blackwell’s Island, and Nine Times Fast. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and doors open at 6 p.m.

Calgary Metalfest begins on Wednesday, June 5 at Dickens Pub (1000 – 9 Ave. S.W.). Check out the section for extensive coverage, and check out http://calgarymetalfest.com for band schedules and show locations. Events – all ages and 18+ – will also be running at Broken City (613 – 11 Ave. S.W.). This will be an EP release party for Misanthropy, whose horror movie metal is equal parts ridiculous and pulverizing. Be sure to pick up a copy of Part V: A New Beginning and Camp Arawak at the event. The festival ends on Saturday, June 8.

Also at Vern’s Pub: Winnipeg’s Noir will perform with The Whorehouse Massacre and Occulus. The progressive black metal band will release their debut Dark Reverence on June 1, and perform in Calgary on Wednesday, June 12. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Doberman will be releasing their debut album at Broken City on Thursday, June 13 alongside IODE and Oh Shit! Tickets are $10 at the door. The self-titled album was recorded by Casey Rogers of Truck, features six tracks, and is nicely laid out in a six-panel eco-jacket. You can listen to it online at http://dobermanyyc.bandcamp.com. The band will follow up the event with a CD release tour alongside Vancouver’s Burning Ghats. Be sure to help fuel their tank and enjoy what drummer Kevin Nelson dubs, “Riff rock inspired hardcore.”

Brutal death metal band Moosifix will release their full-length debut on Saturday, June 29 at Vern’s Pub. The self titled album features six tracks, and is adorned with artwork by vocalist Drew Demarco. It will be available on CD at the show, as well as on Bandcamp and Reverb Nation. Also performing that night will be Morbidly Depraved, Sub-Atomic Chaos, and The Reckless Heroes. Tickets are $10.

On Sunday, June 30, head to Vern’s Pub for Prince Albert’s Druidus, the goat worshipping black/war/death band. They will be performing with Reverend Kill, Vile Insignia, and Haiduk. Be sure to attend to get your fill of heavy.

A few last things: progressive death metal act Train Bigger Monkeys is looking for a bassist. Ye Goat-Herd Gods is looking for an experienced drummer. You may contact both via Facebook.
