BurialkultPURE BLACK METAL WORSHIP

At the infancy of rock ‘n’ roll, the Christian masses blamed Satan for causing this new form of musical rebellion. As rock evolved into more extreme forms, some bands began to embrace the devil’s influence and praise him for his work. Victoria black metal worshippers Burialkult attribute their raw form of first-wave BM to Satan’s guiding hand.

“I think Satan has always been there, always been involved with rock ‘n’ roll and, later, metal,” begins frontman Phlegathon. “Satan represents the adversarial spirit in every one whether you embrace the Devil or not. The Devil is the driving force in metal now and always will be.”

Burialkult, as practitioners of early ‘80s style black metal – think Bathory, Hellhammer etc. – nurture a strong connection to their music’s rock ‘n’ roll roots.

“The sound and style of Burialkult was very intentional indeed. Just as the sound and style of first wave BM was intentional. We embraced the early influences and Gods and wanted that early and raw style and sound to be part of us, the beginning of us.”

However, Phlegathon states that besides the aforementioned acts, he actively being influenced by most things.

“I am a very singular person and like to maintain a large degree of nonconformity and antinomianism. It is through these practices that we can achieve focus and purity.”

This purism is what gives black metal a reputation of being elitist and un-accepting, a point that Phlegathon concedes. But, he insists that such an attitude is necessary to avoid the ideological dilution of other genres.

“Black metal is one of the last vestiges of extreme and dangerous music forms and must be taken seriously and revered highly or it too will face the same fate as rock and roll.

“Long live black metal in its truest form!”

See Burialkult on July 13 at Vern’s Bar as part of the Fuck Off Life fest.
