SUMMER CAMP FLICKS AT OAK TREE TAVERN

It hasn’t been much of a summer this year. The weather’s been stormy and most of us are knee-deep in work-related stuff or still dealing with flooding aftermath.

But rest assured, we still have the month of August to make up for it and find some time to relax. Anything to do with a rooftop is usually awesome and it’s even better when it includes beer, a chill flick and a good friend to enjoy it with. Every Monday in August, CUFF and Oak Tree Tavern are hosting CUFF Rooftop Screening Series: Summer Camp Flicks. All screenings are pay-what-you-can and include themed menus and CUFF’s favourite summer camp flicks. Make it a weekly routine or catch your old time favourite! See you on the rooftop!

Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
August 5

Wet Hot American Summer is a satirical comedy that flopped badly in theatres but now evidently has a fully bloomed cult following. It stares Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and Elizabeth Banks. It takes us back to 1981 at Camp Firewood on the last day of camp. Counsellors have gone wild and Bradley Cooper is choreographing the camp’s talent show. It’s also everybody’s last chance for a romantic encounter of sorts!

Friday the 13th IV: The Final Chapter (1984)
August 12

It all started with Mrs. Voorhees murdering the teenagers of Camp Crystal Lake in Friday the 13th (1980) after her son Jason, left unsupervised by two camp counsellors, drowned in the camp’s lake. Jason is found to be alive in the sequel and starts killing. In the fourth film of the original series, hockey-masked killing machine Jason is back from the morgue and takes on a lakeside family and next door’s rental house filled with hard-partying teens.

Meal Special: Mama Voorhees’ Corn Dog and Tater Tots

Meatballs (1979)
August 19

This low-budget Canadian comedy by Ivan Reitman is bound to make you laugh. It has Bill Murray in his first starring role as Tripper Harrison, the head counsellor at low-end Camp North Star. He trains misfit counsellors, takes loner kid Rudy Gerner (Chris Makepeace) under his wing and seriously digs Roxanne (Kate Lynch), the pretty lady counsellor who helps him run the camp. There’s also the annual Olympiads against Camp Mohawk, the rich meanies from across the lake.

Meal Special: Camp North Star Spaghetti and Meatballs

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
August 26

Sleepaway Camp is a cult classic slasher film by Robert Hiltzik that is still listed with having one of the most shocking endings in horror film history. Main character Angela is withdrawn and barely speaks due to a fatal boating accident that killed her father and brother. When Angela and her cousin, Ricky, are sent to Camp Arawak by her aunt, not only is Angela bullied by her bunkmates, but things start to seriously go wrong…
