BRIDGING CONTINENTS AND HEADLINING FOR THE FIRST TIME
together PANGEA are incredibly ambitious for a band that plays slacker-styled garage tunes. They signed with a major label, released their new full-length record, Badillac, and are now headlining a tour for the first time this winter through to the spring. They’ve spent years being the go-to opening act for bands like Mean Jeans, Ty Segall, and the Black Lips, and now its their turn to sit in the driver’s seat.
Since their formation, together PANGEA have seen cities around the world in support of their three records, including 2011′s Living Dummy on Burger Records. It was around this time that bassist Danny Bengsteen and drummer Erik Jimenez joined, allowing guitarist and songwriter William Keegan to take his tracks out of the bedroom.
Last year, together PANGEA chose to jump up to Harvest Records, their first major label. But it was not a move without controversy, and some of their earliest fans became concerned about their new direction. The result was 2014′s Badillac, a record that presents the band in high fidelity for the first time. The songs, penned by Keegan, mark an evolved effort, a half-hour of garage pop gold. Badillac, also the name of their lead single, has Keegan crooning about wasting time in love and growing jaded beyond his years, while “Sick Shit” brings their early experimental garage punk sound back to the forefront.
Mozes and the Firstborn are coming along for most of together Pangea’s tour dates. A European band with a reputation for fuzzed out grunge riffage, Mozes are serious fans of American rock. They met last year at a show in Europe, when they surprised the band by playing covers together PANGEA’s material.
Last time together PANGEA came to Vancouver, BeatRoute sponsored the show at the Interurban Gallery in the Downtown Eastside. The messiness of that city corner gave the band plenty to write home about, even if you weren’t there to see it. And with a new record under their bels, there is no reason to miss them this time.
