RELEASES:

Dom Hemingway

Jude Law stars as the titular character, a hedonistic and temperamental criminal newly released from prison. Accompanied by the transcendent Richard E. Grant as his friend, Dickie, Dom Hemingway seeks to reconcile with his estranged daughter, played by Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones). Releases April 2.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

In the second instalment of the Captain America films, continuing the saga of The Avengers and the like, Captain America must face off against a legendary mystery assassin, the Winter Soldier.  Releases April 4.

Under the Skin

Scarlett Johansson stars in this film, which is being touted as an art-house take on science fiction. Directed by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast), Under the Skin follows a humanoid alien (Johansson) who preys on men that she picks up hitchhiking around Scotland. Releases April 4.

VANCOUVER EVENTS:

Space Jam

Space Jam was a seminal film for many ‘90s kids. Experience the ultimate throwback Thursday by reliving the film that brought together aliens, Looney Tunes and Michael Jordan. The event is on April 17 at 9 p.m. $10 advance tickets and $12 at the door.

Woody Allen: Spring Collection

The second instalment in the Vancity Theatre’s year-long retrospective of Woody Allen’s films includes many of his more light-hearted comedies and early, funny stuff. The films are playing from April 18-23, many with introductions by cinephiles and film scholars. Check out www.viff.org to find details.

From Within: the Films of David Cronenberg

Cronenberg is one of the most provocative and distinctive filmmakers to ever come out of Canada. The Pacific Cinematheque honours the master of body-horror with a series devoted entirely to him. This complete retrospective of Cronenberg’s film works was organized by the Toronto International Film Festival as part of “The Cronenberg Project,” a multi-platform initiative devoted to Cronenberg’s world and world view. The screenings fall between April 3-13 and 17-31, as well as May 2. Check www.thecinematheque.ca for details.
